Today was #internationaldayofruralwomen and as a London girl that’s moved to the Bush you might think im not qualified to comment, BUT, I think the exact opposite.

Living and working in one of the world’s well equipped, connected and diverse cities you have everything on your doorstep: jobs, restaurants, activities, shops (sooo many shops!), theatre, cinema and so on... if you need to get anywhere you hail a cab, jump on the bus or duck down into the underground. Life IS tough in the big smoke but it’s also pretty easy when you come to living on the other side.

Goondiwindi QLD, Australia

Never did I know the importance of rain. I mean a day WITHOUT rain in the UK is a miracle, but here in the stonking heat of rural Queensland people are literally praying for something to fall from the sky - their livelihoods literally rely on it. I just doesn’t rain.

I see how hard rural people work, when it’s nearly 3 hours to the next big town supporting local businesses is a must to keep them going. People talk to each other here, it’s a community. For the city girl that is used to feeling alone surrounded by hundreds of thousands of strangers it can be quite a shock when people actually stop to ask you how you are.

I work with rural women every day, these women are what keep this town thriving, a laid back just get on with it attitude is something the Aussies have mastered; they knuckle down, take care of the kids, work their butts off and give their time to local events and organisations. They don’t stop. And mostly coming from farming households which are struggling you cannot help but feel empowered by their strength and optimism.

I may not be a rural woman at heart, but living the rural life is a real eye opener - I admire and applaud every single one of you so THANK YOU for embracing me, taking me into your home and for supporting MY rural business. 🇦🇺👩🏻‍🌾💙
