We all have mental health, just like we all have physical health. And just like physical health can sometimes decline so can our mental wellbeing. At some point in our lives we will all feel something and for some of us that feeling can become something more. And that’s OK, you are not alone.
On this day last year i completed 3 days training to become an accredited Mental Health First Aider & Mental Health For The Suicidal First Aider, learning how to notice the signs of mental ill health & how to help anyone suffering open up to seek the professional help needed.
This reminder couldnt have come at a better time. As fear rises with the enevitable COVID-19 virus making an appearence many people are feeling anxious, worried and scared for themselves and loved ones, along with panic and confusion especially for the elderly and more vulnerable, I felt now was a good time to reitterate that if you need a chat or need anything, to give me a call.
There is a high chance of self isolation and for some, this may be very difficult to deal with. For those that are used to having visitors because they cant get out ordinarily, this will be a very difficult time. For the small businesses that rely on locals and social interactions this too could be a very tough.
Society still carries a huge stigma around this subject leading those who are feeling depressed, anxious, suicidal or living with substance addiction to hide and stay silent for fear of how the community will perceive them. Well I will never judge, never dismiss and never undermine anyone. If you or anyone you know is feeling down, acting differently, has become withdrawn, or you suspect someone is living with a mental illness / the onset of mental illness, I invite you to reach out to me. 85% of deaths by suicide in Australia are male, Anxiety is the most common mental illness amongst Australian women and 1 in 5 People living in Australia are living with a mental illness.
There are so many places to seek help if you know about them and I can help with that. Often people don’t speak out for fear of medical records, losing their jobs or having their children taken away but this is not what will happen.
