U N E A S Y .

It’s funny you know, people come to yoga thinking ‘it will be easy’ - but what is ‘easy’? Everyone’s perception is different and that’s the magic of this practice.

The art of yoga is tuning in with your body, connecting with your breath and being, well, a little bit uncomfortable. We don’t mean you spend an hour in pain, that is NOT yoga. We mean discomfort in so many different ways at so many levels.

‘it’s quite difficult isn’t it?’

For some the difficulty can be just coming to class. Stepping out your comfort zone to try something new. Or to attend class on your own, the fear of vulnerability. That can be quite daunting. For some the difficulty can be justifying giving yourself the time - well it’s selfish to take time out for you isn’t it? Overcoming that irrational thought process of doing something to benefit your health and mental health.

Then there is the the actual practice itself. Letting go of ego is a huge hurdle, even if we don’t see ourselves as egotistical we are naturally self critical; we are conditioned to compare ourselves to others or even to ourselves - to how we were yesterday, last week, our younger self, before our bodies gave birth to children or pre op for an injury. We can easily become frustrated if we think we can’t do something or do something the way we THINK we should... this is where the unease can really kick in. Then there is ‘just being’, the difficulty in letting go, living in the moment, pushing aside the daily grind and constant mind chatter. And breathing- so many people dont realise how hard it can be to breath.

Your yoga practice is YOUR yoga practice and it is the difficulties and personal challenges which make it so powerful and make such a difference to how your brain works, how your mind feels and how your body soaks up the benefits.

The most common comment I receive, especially from first timers is ‘it’s quite difficult isn’t it?’ or ‘it’s not as easy as I thought it would be’ - but hearing these words and seeing my yogis then come back for me and come back regularly developing in ways that maybe they can’t even see themselves is so rewarding to their everyday lives.

‘They’ say anything worth doing isn’t easy, working through difficult situations is what brings us to a state of peace and ‘ease’. The enjoyment and the feeling of accomplishment of feeding your body and mind valuable lessons is what drives us. It is what gives us life.

So yoga may not always be ‘easy’, but it sure as hell is worth it. 🖤💫
